Who Has Time for This?

For the average investor, time is fleeting. Between family, work, and extra-curriculars, who has the time for investment manager research? The commitment to perform due-diligence on active strategies for a portfolio is daunting, to say the least. In fact, there are plenty of people that spend 40+ hours a week doing it and still cannot crack the code.

Outside of a single multi-asset strategy, which there are an abundance of, the average portfolio might need a minimum of three strategies – domestic, foreign, and fixed income. If slicing the pie further to include small cap, emerging markets, and high yield, one ends up with six managers – and even at that you leave behind bank loans, microcap, private equity, real estate, and other alternatives. All of which must be chosen from a sea of ETFs, mutual funds, and separate accounts. Then decide active or passive? Value or Growth? Long-short or long-only? Cash?!

Seems a little dizzying even for the most educated professional. Understandably, most investors balk at the thought - let alone possess the necessary skillset to do so effectively in their “spare” time. Thus, one begins to understand the rise of index investing.

Simplicity Trumps Complexity

Too often, active managers strive to paint strategies as very sophisticated and only to be supported by a deep bench of Ph.D.’s and CFA charterholders with centuries of experience – although it’s most likely an effort to justify higher fees. To the end investor, however, this messaging can come off as jargon, pompous, and cold.

Ultimately, complexity in an investment strategy increases the chance of weak points and total system failure. So, what if there was a simple, easy-to-understand, active strategy available at a reasonable price? Does such a rarity exist?

The good news is that such strategies do exist! Most importantly, they even reside exactly where one needs it most – inefficient asset classes where active management pays off in abundance. Think domestic and foreign small cap, emerging markets, and microcaps. Wait… what?!

The fact is, simplicity is, well, simple. Investing isn’t brain surgery. Nor should it be proposed as such. By focusing on a handful of proven characteristics and employing an ignore-the-short-term-noise, business-owner mindset, active managers can add alpha at a competitive price over the long term.

Opus. Simply Active.

Opus makes active investing simple. By focusing on a few proven characteristics, supported by a team who is committed to the research, the firm provides active solutions at a fair price in several inefficient asset classes including U.S. small cap, U.S. microcap, foreign small cap, and emerging markets.

With an experienced team and a philosophy that is old enough to legally drink, Opus is an expert in simplicity. Across strategies the message is the same – find high-quality companies selling at discounted valuations. No derivatives, no hidden fees, just quality investments. Don’t worry – they can also jargonize it for you, if you want.
