Microcap Value

Investment Summary

It causes Opus much chagrin that the widespread notoriety for bourbon, America’s only native spirit, did not start until the early 1980s, almost two-hundred years after our neighbors in Kentucky started distilling an unlikely combination of corn and limestone water. Like bourbon, microcap companies have been around a long time, but have only recently started gaining attention from investors.

Though bourbon may have wide interest, microcaps, an underfollowed asset class, have just started growing in popularity. The appetite of institutional investors has continued to age, and the desire for a unique and alpha-seeking single batch strategy has emerged. Nobody knows for sure the origin of bourbon, but enthusiasts know that the refined process took centuries to perfect. Though Opus’ process is not aged in charred oak barrels, the firm has over twenty years of experience in the smaller capitalization space. During this time, Opus has refined its investment philosophy and created a desirable and timeless batch of quality and value.

Opus’ philosophy is rooted in the belief that there are inefficiencies in this universe, resulting in numerous high-quality companies that exhibit low valuation, attractive growth, and strong momentum. These companies tend to outperform over long periods of time, and Opus’ deep, fundamental research uncovers catalysts that unlock value.

Our Microcap Value strategy evaluates companies by using this time-tested philosophy and process, which has historically produced long-term outperformance.

  Lower Valuation
Stocks with lower valuations provide downside protection and have outperformed over longer periods of time.

  Higher Quality
Purchasing higher quality companies with lower leverage and higher returns on equity reduces the risk of a permanent loss of capital.

  Momentum
Reflective of both investor sentiment and underlying business strength, momentum is a powerful indicator that helps eliminate the value traps.
