Microcap Value

Process

The firm’s research-driven investment process is distinguished by three key elements:
microcap value Idea Generation from Multiple Sources Produce Better Investment Decisions
Opus Capital’s unique combination of independent analysis with spirited, collegial debate improves outcomes.

Names that are not sourced from management discussions, industry knowledge, and prior research from other strategies are obtained through factor-based analysis. This proprietary analysis identifies stocks with characteristics that have led to long-term outperformance, including low valuations, high quality, and strong momentum. Through the use of multiple sources, a rich universe of stocks is formed from which to choose and a steady flow of fresh potential purchase candidates is ensured.

Proprietary, World-Class Fundamental Research
Opus determines what will drive stock outperformance through deep fundamental research and independent thinking.

After identifying ideas warranting further research, fundamental research begins, the intent of which is to determine if the company fits the core investment philosophy of the strategy. Fundamental analysis constitutes the vast majority of the investment team’s research efforts; the portfolio manager evaluates every stock considered for the portfolio.

Independent Thinking Results in Unique Perspectives
Opus’ objective, which is achieved through rigorous analysis and spirited debate, is to identify the key catalysts that will drive stock appreciation. Mining such catalysts is what enables Opus to take a different view from the market.

After independent analysis, the investment team engages in spirited yet collegial discussions that form final consensus-based decisions. All new ideas must be evaluated in terms of potential capital appreciation relative to what is already owned.
Portfolio Construction is a Function of Three Factors …
  • Composition of existing portfolio
  • Identification of compelling buy candidates
  • Determination of sell candidates that may have reached established price targets or that violate their original investments theses.
The portfolio is constructed based upon the investment team’s deep knowledge, experience, and exhaustive due diligence.

… With an Eye on Risk

Opus monitors its risk controls at the portfolio level and security level, which include industry and sector weightings as well as specific stock and market cap restrictions, daily.

Diversification controls at the portfolio level include:

The result of this consistent, disciplined, and repeatable investment process is a fully invested, diversified portfolio of 80-130 high quality securities with low valuations, attractive growth prospects, lower leverage, and strong momentum.
