International Small Cap

Process

Our process is simple. It is just like the Picasso quote on the difference between art critics and artists. Critics talk about form, shape, etc. while artists talk about where to find cheap turpentine. We are like the artist, and just try to find good companies trading at cheap prices. A Business Owner Mindset Guides Our Investment Process
We cast a wide net to find companies that meet out rigorous investment criteria.
  • Observe – Economic environment, market conditions, feedback.
  • Orient – Prior research, management discussions, industry knowledge, factor-based analysis
  • Decide – Growth potential, quality, valuation (switch order in graphic, too)
  • Act – Buy/sell decision
Observe, Orient, Decide, Act
Portfolios Are Built by Our Team . . .
  • Each portfolio manager brings a unique perspective, while operating within the disciplined framework we have developed.
  • Portfolio managers are supported by a team of dedicated fundamental research analysts.
  • Buy and sell decisions are made by the portfolio managers subsequent to rigorous review and spirited yet collegial discussions among the investment team.
. . . From the Bottom-Up
  • Each security considered for purchase is evaluated on its own merits from a bottom-up perspective, and our research often includes interaction with company management.
  • Existing holdings are closely monitored on an ongoing basis as we evaluate information that affects the company’s fundamentals or risk profile.
  • Sell candidates are evaluated individually, and stocks may be sold based on valuation, deterioration in business fundamentals, elevated risk, or in light of portfolio considerations.
With an Eye on Risk
  • We agree with Charlie Munger’s definition of risk, which is, “1) the risk of permanent loss of capital, or 2) the risk of inadequate return.”
  • Our emphasis on valuation helps mitigate both sources of risk at the security level.
  • Diversification at the region, sector, and security level mitigates risk at the portfolio level.
Region Weight, Sector Weight, Position Size
“Discipline is the soul of an army. It makes small numbers formidable; procures success to the weak , and esteem to all.”
- George Washington
